چکیده

Consider an experiment in which 10 subjects receive a placebo, and another 10 receive an experimental diuretic. After 8 h, the average urine output in the placebo group is 769 mL, versus 814 mL in the diuretic group—a difference of 45 mL (Figure 1). How do we know if that difference means the drug works and is not just a result of chance? of 45 mL in the average urine output between groups under the null hypothesis. Because this is a very small probability, we reject the null hypothesis. It does not mean that the drug is a diuretic, nor that there is 97% chance of the drug being a diuretic.

Effective leadership is an issue which cannot be o...

Mistaking the Map for the Territory: What Society Does With Medicine; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”

Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...

Oil, petroleum, hydrocarbon — words that have become popular in our modern-day vernacular, but what do they really mean to us

Oil, petroleum, hydrocarbon — words that have become popular in our modern-day vernacular, but what do they really mean to us? What is oil? How does it form? Where do we find it? How do we look for it? Do we really need it? Why? Are we actually running out? Does its use damage our environment? These are all good questions, but some of the answers are not quite so simple. This issue of Rock Talk...

What Does Exercise-Based Assessment Really Mean?

My commentary addresses Lance’s recommendation to reorient assessment center (AC) practice away from dimensions toward exercise-based assessment. As exercisebased assessment is dealt with only in general terms in Lance’s article, I aim to delineate what exercise-based assessment really means. Two points are made. First, I argue that taking dimensions away from ACs does not mean that assessee be...

Intrinsic Value: Towards A Pragmatic Theory

Intrinsic value is a concept central to the environmentalist movement. Whether one believes that natural objects have intrinsic value is supposed to determine whether one takes a ecocentric or homocentric approach to environmentalism, whether we practice deep or (merely) shallow ecology.  Yet this concept is also a center of controversy and confusion.  Just what does it mean for something to ha...
